Abstract

This thesis examines how the microelectronics firm CEPHIS is positioned within its inter-organizational networks and how that position shapes knowledge transfer, transaction costs, and innovation processes. The research question is a network analysis focused on clarifying CEPHIS’s position. The study is motivated by the idea that central network positions can improve access to knowledge and partners, thereby supporting innovation. Methodologically, it adopts an explanatory, theory-driven case study grounded in the network perspective and complemented by theories on market orientation, innovation (sustaining vs. disruptive, scope, (de-)commoditization, and appropriability), transaction cost economics, knowledge transfer (network position and absorptive capacity), and network configuration and innovation success. The project is situated at the analysis level (level 4) in Bloom’s taxonomy, draws on Arbnor & Bjerke’s methodological frameworks, and clarifies key concepts such as explicit and tacit knowledge, codification, and governance (vertical integration vs. disintegration). This excerpt outlines the research question, theoretical choices, and design for analyzing CEPHIS’s tasks and relationships; empirical findings and conclusions are not included here.
