This thesis examines diaspora tourism through the lens of Ireland’s national initiative The Gathering 2013. Framed by Ireland’s long history of emigration and renewed outflows after the 2008 crisis, it explores how government-led tourism can engage the diaspora and negotiate relationships, identity, and belonging across borders. The study distinguishes diaspora tourism from related notions such as heritage and VFR tourism and considers how returning diaspora navigate roles between tourist and local.
