Abstract
This thesis explores how Eritrean refugees in Ethiopia meet their basic needs and plan onward migration to other countries. It examines how information, resources, social networks, and legal rights either help or hinder refugees in accessing food, shelter, healthcare, and safety. The study focuses on Eritrean refugees living in Addis Ababa and in the Alem Wachi refugee camp. Questionnaires are used to map what kinds of information refugees receive, what economic and social resources they can access, which networks they rely on, and what legal opportunities and restrictions shape their lives. Rather than only describing their situation, the study uses an explanatory research design to uncover the causal mechanisms at work: how flows of information, socioeconomic resources, social networks, and legal frameworks influence whether refugees can meet their basic needs or feel compelled to move on. A randomly selected group of refugees participates in the questionnaire survey. Primary data come from these questionnaires, while secondary data are collected from UN aid workers involved in humanitarian assistance. The data are analyzed using qualitative methods to provide a deeper understanding of refugees’ everyday conditions and their options for staying or migrating onward.
