Abstract

This project asks how ethnomusicology—the study of music in its social and cultural context—can reveal nationalistic identity in the United States and Denmark. Using case examples from 2002–2023, it examines how nationalism influences and is expressed through music, identifying both subtle, everyday signals (banal nationalism) and more overt, confrontational forms (aggressive nationalism). Through a comparative analysis, the study presents nationalism as a spectrum and shows that musical expressions vary with each country’s culture and events.
