Abstract

This thesis examines which characteristics of problem-based learning (PBL) successful students themselves believe most contribute to their success in engineering programs. Centering the learner’s perspective, it asks: Which aspects of PBL (if any) do successful students attribute to their success? The study employed a short initial questionnaire capturing both quantitative and qualitative input from 53 students with PBL experience (primarily in engineering, with some in related areas such as product design and architecture) across multiple cultures, followed by an independently facilitated focus group with 5 participants. While the sample is too small to support strong statistical claims, findings indicate that students’ experience of PBL is generally positive and that 60% of respondents attribute their success to the teamwork characteristic of PBL. In response, the thesis revisits the PBL literature with a focus on teamwork to synthesize current thinking, recommendations, and open issues for integrating teamwork effectively into engineering curricula. The project experience also aligns with existing literature on the importance of skilled facilitation in PBL.
