Abstract

This thesis examines how more individualized and flexible work models can be designed as a sustainable evolution of work practices in the wake of COVID-19. Focusing on advising engineering organizations, we apply Practice Theory, supplemented by participatory methods and design tools (including boundary objects, storyboards, and fishbone/Ishikawa diagrams), to trace the historical development of work, map current practices during the pandemic’s shift to home working, and identify everyday “breakdowns”—especially related to remote work. The empirical work was conducted with employees from three large, anonymized Danish advising engineering organizations. Our analysis highlights the pivotal role of management and policy in structuring and supporting individual needs and healthy work environments, and the need to both realize the potential and address the limits of remote work. Based on concept proposals and feedback, we derive design criteria for a framework that can support flexible, individualized, and more agile work models. The thesis contributes a practice-grounded starting point and a set of design principles for transitioning toward more sustainable work practices; detailed solutions and impact assessments fall beyond this excerpt and are proposed for future work.

Denne afhandling undersøger, hvordan mere individualiserede og fleksible arbejdsmodeller kan designes som en bæredygtig videreudvikling af arbejdspraksisser i kølvandet på COVID-19. Med rådgivende ingeniørvirksomheder som case anvender vi praksisteori, suppleret af deltagende metoder og designværktøjer (bl.a. grænseobjekter, storyboards og Ishikawa-/fiskenbensdiagrammer), til at udforske arbejdets historiske udvikling, kortlægge aktuelle praksisser under pandemiens skifte til hjemmearbejde og identificere “brud” i hverdagspraksis—særligt i relation til fjernarbejde. Empirien bygger på samarbejde med medarbejdere i tre store, anonymiserede danske rådgivende ingeniørorganisationer. Analysen peger på, at ledelse og politikdannelse spiller en central rolle for at strukturere og understøtte individuelle behov og sunde arbejdsmiljøer, og at der er behov for at udfolde potentialer og håndtere begrænsninger ved fjernarbejde. På baggrund af konceptforslag og feedback udleder vi designkriterier for en ramme, der kan støtte fleksible, individualiserede og mere agile arbejdsmodeller. Afhandlingen bidrager med et praksisforankret udgangspunkt og et sæt designprincipper for overgang mod mere bæredygtige arbejdspraksisser, men endelige løsninger og effekter ligger uden for dette uddrag og foreslås videreudviklet i fremtidigt arbejde.
