Abstract

This thesis explores how to design a tall office building in a dense city that truly supports future knowledge workers, meaning people whose jobs focus on creating and using information. It challenges conventional office design by taking a holistic look at basic human (physiological) needs such as light, air, comfort and movement, and at how information-focused workplaces are evolving. Given the economic stakes of a project at this scale, the architectural focus is on an efficient, high-value building in a location where the investment can be justified by clear urban and social benefits. The building aims to add positively to the city skyline while addressing common street-level issues caused by large structures, including excessive shadows, wind turbulence and an overwhelming sense of scale.
