Abstract

This thesis examines whether an interactive procedural-adaptive storyworld can enhance player experience without sacrificing authorial control. It proposes a framework that couples procedural content generation with adaptive, real-time storytelling: the system continuously evaluates game state from player behavior and interactions, infers meaning, encodes adaptive steering, and feeds it back to change the unfolding narrative. To mitigate the open-world narrative paradox, a space–time drama manager schedules events independently of fixed locations and times. A proof-of-concept demo was built and evaluated in a between-subjects study (n=3) comparing a linear, non-adaptive control condition with an interactive procedural-adaptive condition. A mean comparison suggests improved player experience in the adaptive condition; findings are preliminary given the very small sample.
