Abstract
This project aims at investigating different mechanisms of power and knowledge filtering regarding urban structures’ impact on travel and its practical implication, in terms of possibility, to influence the amount of motorized traffic in cities through land use planning. The project takes a wide perspective on mechanisms of knowledge. The conceptions of knowledge filtering are based on different concepts of power, which are originally theorized in mutual excluding manners concerning some issues. Filtering relevant knowledge of the effect on the built environment on travel will be investigated both within the academic and the political arenas. It will be shown how state-of-the-art knowledge on urban structures’ impact on travel is excluded, distorted or framed as less important because of power.
