Abstract

This study examines the levels of work-related quality of life (WRQOL), work engagement, and empowerment among social workers in the Philippines, and explores whether these dimensions are linked. Using a mixed-methods design, WRQOL was assessed with the WRQOL scale, work engagement with the 9-item Utrecht Work Engagement Scale (UWES), and empowerment was explored through questionnaires alongside individual and group interviews; 52 social workers participated via online surveys and virtual interviews. Findings indicate that social workers in the private sector report higher WRQOL and engagement than those in government, and regular employees report higher levels than those on contractual terms. Participants considered themselves empowered while highlighting the need for stronger support from employing organizations and the local professional body. Results also suggest that workers with average to high WRQOL and engagement report greater empowerment. Implications include links to professional practice and ethical principles, the need for proactive protections for social workers, improving services by strengthening worker well-being, and standardizing and regularizing the profession for appropriate support and recognition. Recommendations emphasize innovation and more radical approaches to emerging challenges, building social work organizations and unions, and investing in social workers’ human capital to enhance programs and services.
