Lytix: A generic quality assurance testing tool in Unity

Abstract

Playtesting, having people try a game to find problems and opportunities, is time-consuming, and many available tools are locked to specific genres, require separate software, or sit outside the Unity editor. Lytix is a free, open-source plugin for the Unity editor that brings common playtesting tools together in one place. It shows player movement trails (the paths players take), spatial heatmaps (where players spend time), logs custom events, lets developers leave feedback notes directly in the scene, and tracks variables (key game values), all without exporting data or switching tools. Lytix was designed to work across different game genres and to stay out of the developer's way. We built two versions; the second reworked variable tracking and settings portability based on what we learned from testing the first. In a pair testing study, the visualization tools supported meaningful analysis: every pair identified design problems and suggested concrete improvements using player data alone.

Playtesting, at lade folk afprøve et spil for at finde problemer og muligheder, er tidskrævende, og mange eksisterende løsninger er proprietære, genrespecifikke, kræver separat software eller ligger uden for Unity-editoren. Lytix er et gratis open source-plugin til Unity-editoren, som samler centrale playtestværktøjer ét sted. Det viser bevægelsesspor fra spillere (stierne de tager), rumlige varmekort (hvor de opholder sig), logger brugerdefinerede hændelser, gør det muligt at lægge feedback-noter direkte i scenen og sporer variabler (vigtige spilværdier) - alt sammen uden at eksportere data eller skifte værktøj.
