Abstract
This thesis examines the concept and practice of living labs through the case of Living Lab Nordjylland in Frederikshavn Municipality. It asks how a valid experiment can be conducted in an open, real-life environment with co-producers, and how involved actors understand and use the living lab concept in practice. Using a techno-anthropological approach, the authors conducted empirical fieldwork that included being embedded in the field, mapping actors, and carrying out expert and semi-structured interviews and dialogues. The analysis is informed by the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM/TAM2), open innovation, participatory design, Urban Living Lab literature, and design research mapping, and engages with local initiatives such as Energibyen Frederikshavn and the Energy Trail at Knivholt Hovedgaard. The aim is to condense and clarify the terminology, develop a practice-oriented definition of a living lab, and discuss themes such as end-user roles, gatekeeping, participation, the risk of living lab becoming a buzzword, and business model considerations. While the excerpt does not include final results, the project seeks to bridge theory and practice and provide accessible guidance for designing and evaluating living lab experiments.
