Lighting in an Urban Environment with the Consideration of Biodiversity

Abstract

This thesis explores how to design lighting for urban green spaces that supports people’s wellbeing at night while reducing harm to biodiversity. It acknowledges the value of darkness and our bond with nature, and seeks solutions that work for both humans and nocturnal species by limiting disturbance to natural habitats. Using an extensive literature review, a site analysis of JC. Jacobsen Have in Copenhagen, and observations inspired by Pallasmaa within a deductive approach, the study develops a holistic lighting design framework. Guided by this framework, measurements were taken in several Copenhagen green areas of three key factors: correlated color temperature (CCT, how warm or cool light appears), spectral power distribution (SPD, the mix of wavelengths in the light), and light intensity (brightness). A design proposal illustrates how lighting can feel inviting and safe for people while remaining in harmony with nature and respecting the fragile balance between human needs and biodiversity.

Dette speciale undersøger, hvordan belysning i urbane grønne områder kan udformes, så den styrker menneskers trivsel om aftenen og samtidig mindsker den negative påvirkning af biodiversiteten. Det anerkender både mørkets værdi og vores forbindelse til naturen og søger løsninger, der fungerer for både mennesker og nataktive arter ved at begrænse forstyrrelser af naturlige levesteder. Gennem en omfattende litteraturgennemgang, en stedsanalyse af JC. Jacobsen Have i København og observationer inspireret af Pallasmaa i en deduktiv tilgang udvikles et holistisk rammeværk for belysningsdesign. Med dette rammeværk som udgangspunkt blev der i flere københavnske grønne områder målt på tre centrale forhold: korreleret farvetemperatur (CCT, hvor varmt eller koldt lyset opleves), spektral effektfordeling (SPD, fordelingen af bølgelængder i lyset) og lysstyrke (intensitet). Et designforslag viser, hvordan belysning kan være indbydende og tryg for mennesker, i samspil med naturen, og med respekt for den skrøbelige balance mellem mennesket og biodiversiteten.
