Abstract

This thesis examines the phenomenon of shrinkage—long-term decline in a place—and its dynamics, along with the strategies different stakeholders use to counter or adapt to it. Because decline can take different forms and operate at multiple scales, the study looks at three levels: the European context, the national level in Denmark, and the local level. To ground the analysis, the thesis uses two Danish municipalities, Lolland and Bornholm, as case studies. This approach provides context-specific insights into the causes and consequences of decline in these places and assesses the local strategies designed to cope with these changes.
