Abstract

This thesis examines the transfer of learning from Denmark to Vietnam within Danish companies that outsource work. Differences in so-called soft skills—such as knowledge sharing, reflection, conflict resolution, and communication—can challenge collaboration and the demands of globalization. University College Lillebælt (UCL) partners with Danish companies in Vietnam to develop the competencies of local employees. UCL trains middle managers in soft skills, technical skills, and the Danish didactic approach to teaching and learning, with the aim that they will pass this approach on to their teams. The study explores how Vietnamese employees experience UCL’s teaching and whether, and how, they use it in their organizations. It also examines how the Danish didactic approach is perceived, which learning traditions shape employees’ ways of thinking and learning, and whether Danish and Vietnamese approaches may clash in the workplace. In addition, the thesis looks at how a Danish organizational structure and culture are received in Vietnam, and whether participation in UCL’s courses has led to changes in employees’ behavior. In short, it investigates both the transfer of learning from courses to practice and the local translation/adaptation of that learning.
