Abstract
Dette speciale udvikler et arkitektonisk design til et krematorium i Rovaniemi i Lapland på en skovklædt, skrånende grund i Nivankylä. Projektet undersøger, hvordan arkitektur kan samle mennesker og tale åbent om død og sorg. Vi arbejder med en tektonisk tilgang – hvor konstruktion, materialer og samlinger gøres læsbare – for at forbinde bygningen med landskabet og den nordiske kultur. Designet udfolder fire temaer: atmosfære og sanseoplevelse, tektonik, forholdet mellem arkitektur og landskab samt nordisk kulturel kontekst. Gennem gentagne skitser, stedanalyse og studier af rumlige og konstruktive kvaliteter beskriver vi, hvordan krematoriets typologi kan formes til netop dette sted. Fordybede studier af akustik, lys, bærende struktur og materialer styrer den videre udformning for at skabe en integreret og respektfuld ramme, der understøtter eftertanke ved grænsen mellem liv og død.
This thesis develops an architectural design for a crematorium in Rovaniemi, Lapland, on a wooded, sloping site in Nivankylä. The project explores how architecture can bring people together and openly acknowledge death and mourning. We use a tectonic approach—making structure, materials, and joints legible—to connect the building to its landscape and to Nordic culture. The design investigates four themes: atmosphere and sensory experience, tectonics, the relationship between architecture and landscape, and the Nordic cultural context. Through repeated iterations, site analysis, and studies of spatial and constructive qualities, we define how the crematorium typology can be shaped for this place. Detailed work on acoustics, light, structure, and materials guides the design to create an integrated, respectful setting that supports reflection at the boundary between life and death.
