Abstract

This thesis examines Langeland’s potential as an angling destination at a time of growing nature-based tourism, alongside the authors’ plan to take over an accommodation facility on the island. The aim is to understand what motivates anglers to travel, which destination attributes they prefer, and whether Langeland can meet these requirements. Using an interpretivist approach, the study conducted qualitative in-depth interviews with anglers in Region South Denmark, interviews with industry experts, and desk research. The interview design applied laddering within means–end theory and narrative techniques to link concrete destination features to perceived benefits and personal values. Analytically, Pearce and Lee’s Travel Career Pattern was combined with McIntyre & Pigram’s specialization theory by substituting travel experience with angler specialization level; Smith’s generic tourism product, aligned with angling literature, was used to identify desired product elements. Findings indicate common core motives among angling tourists: escape and relaxation, strengthening relationships, stimulation, and nature. Highly specialized anglers are more driven by self-actualization, isolation, and nostalgia, whereas less specialized anglers emphasize recognition and self-development. On the destination side, the physical plant—environmental quality, fishing quality, and facility provision—emerges as critical; Langeland is assessed as strong on these elements, suggesting solid potential for further angling tourism development on the island.
