Abstract

Lacuna is a process report from an industrial design master’s thesis that examines how crowdfunding can be used to frame product development and market entry. The project begins with a trend- and statistics-based survey of crowdfunded projects and progresses through analysis and concept trials related to both toys and lighting. With the intention of publishing on a crowdfunding platform, potential users were involved early for research and feedback, resulting in a structure inspired by open-source development and expandable modularity. The process combines market and business analyses (including Business Model Canvas, Porter’s Five Forces, Blue Ocean, and SWOT) with iterative design activities such as ideation, sketching, CAD, mock-ups, user tests, and concept detailing focused on modularity (including spherical modularity), magnetic assembly, customization and add-ons, lighting principles, and materials/production. The outcome is the foundation for a modular construction toy that integrates qualities from lighting design, documented in this process report (Part 1), while the product itself is presented in Part 2. Conducted as a solo project with limited development time, the work aims to deliver a near-complete design ready for crowdfunding.

Forløbet omfatter markeds- og forretningsanalyse (bl.a.
