Abstract
This master’s thesis presents the design of a new public library for Klaksvík in the Faroe Islands as a catalyst for community, knowledge, and sustainable development. Framed by Henning Larsen Architects’ masterplan for a new city center, the project asks how a library, through architectural means, can sustain and redevelop the traditional Faroese mentality to accommodate sustainable degrowth in a small community. The work combines a theoretical discussion of sustainability and degrowth with analyses of Faroese culture, vernacular architecture, site and program, case studies, and an iterative design process from sketching to synthesis. The resulting proposal organizes social and contemplative spaces to promote knowledge sharing, inspiration, and cooperation, and sets out principles for spatial programming, materiality, ventilation, facade, and urban detailing. The design is presented and discussed in relation to the project vision of strengthening the community in line with a degrowth mindset; the thesis also addresses indoor environment and energy performance as part of a holistic approach.
