IT-Based Value Co-Creation and its Design Implications

Abstract

This thesis explores how value co-creation can be used to inform the design of an IT solution that supports students’ learning in a blended learning context. Using a design science research approach, the study began with two focus group interviews that revealed students’ reluctance to ask questions due to a lack of safe space and transparency. Guided by a theoretically derived value co-creation framework, a knowledge-sharing artifact was designed with features such as anonymity (to foster safety) and a rating system (to enhance transparency), alongside elements like a “Lecturer approved” stamp and options to post questions, provide answers, and elaborate; the visual design drew inspiration from Jodel. Two prototype iterations were evaluated. Findings indicate that a design informed by value co-creation can create value for students by increasing perceived safety and transparency and strengthening sense of community, thus showing potential to address the identified problem. The study also produced an improved, more generic value co-creation framework and offers a pragmatic example of applying the concept to IT design in the university context.

Gennem design science research blev problemet først afdækket via to fokusgruppeinterviews, som pegede på, at studerende har svært ved at stille spørgsmål på grund af manglende tryghed og transparens. På baggrund af en eksisterende, teoretisk udviklet ramme for value co-creation blev et vidensdelingsartefakt designet med funktioner som anonymitet (for at skabe et trygt rum) og et ratingsystem (for at øge transparens), samt elementer som “Lecturer approved”-stempel og muligheder for at stille spørgsmål, svare og uddybe; den grafiske udformning blev delvist inspireret af Jodel. To prototyper blev evalueret i to runder. Fundene indikerer, at et design informeret af value co-creation kan skabe værdi for studerende ved at øge oplevelsen af tryghed og transparens samt styrke fællesskabsfølelsen, og dermed har potentiale til at afhjælpe det identificerede problem. Derudover resulterede arbejdet i en forbedret og mere generisk ramme for value co-creation og bidrager med et pragmatisk eksempel på, hvordan begrebet kan omsættes til IT-design i en universitetskontekst.
