Abstract

This thesis examines how local community involvement shapes sustainable tourism development in Cox’s Bazaar, Bangladesh. Drawing on a qualitative case study, it combines interviews with local stakeholders (including business owners and NGO workers) and secondary sources from government and NGOs, analyzed through thematic analysis. The study focuses on the importance of sustainable tourism, the cultural and social impacts of tourism, and key challenges and opportunities, including placemaking initiatives. Findings indicate that active local participation fosters sustainable tourism by stimulating economic development, strengthening environmental protection, and supporting cultural preservation, while placemaking creates business opportunities and economic diversification without eroding local identity. At the same time, notable barriers persist: weak communication and collaboration with tourism developers, limited access to education and training, exclusion from decision-making, lack of trust, and financial constraints. The thesis recommends more inclusive participation models, targeted training, improved communication channels, and financial support, alongside stronger collaboration among communities, NGOs, and policymakers. Overall, it underscores the potential of community-driven initiatives to deliver economic, environmental, and cultural sustainability in Cox’s Bazaar for the benefit of both residents and the tourism sector.
