Abstract

Bangladesh is a major producer of hides with significant economic potential, yet its leather sector faces increasing pressure to meet environmental and social standards, notably LWG certification, which requires traceability of raw hides. Despite this international focus and market demand, traceability adoption in Bangladeshi tanneries remains limited, with few attempts and no visible outcomes. This thesis investigates the key barriers to implementing a traceability system in the country’s tanning industry. A mixed-methods design combines secondary data (desk review) with primary data from a questionnaire survey and key informant interviews. To address the research objective, the study maps the tannery supply chain, conducts a qualitative bow-tie risk analysis of non-compliance, performs a private cost–benefit analysis of traceability investment, compares available leather tracing technologies, identifies and analyzes key stakeholders, and applies factor analysis to 21 survey variables. The findings highlight four interrelated factors that hinder implementation: lack of infrastructure, lack of financial support, lack of suitable technology, and lack of regulatory measures. The thesis recommends a multifaceted approach that builds industrial and institutional infrastructure, strengthens industry–academia collaboration, provides financial incentives, and establishes enforceable regulations to enable a sustainable and traceable leather value chain.
