Multilevel-konverterteknologi er ved at ændre området for fleksible AC-transmissionssystemer (FACTS), og den modulære multilevel-konverter (MMC) har fået stor forskerinteresse. Denne afhandling udvikler et avanceret styringssystem til en MMC, der bruges i en STATCOM (statisk synkron kompenser), en enhed som stabiliserer netspænding ved at udveksle reaktiv effekt. Styringen vurderes under interne og eksterne ubalancer—både uens forhold inde i konverteren og i elnettet—gennem omfattende simuleringer og laboratorieforsøg. Multilevel converter technology is reshaping Flexible AC Transmission Systems (FACTS), and the Modular Multilevel Converter (MMC) has attracted strong research interest. This thesis develops an advanced control system for an MMC used in a STATCOM (Static Synchronous Compensator), a device that stabilizes grid voltage by exchanging reactive power. The control is evaluated under internal and external unbalances—uneven conditions inside the converter and in the power grid—through extensive simulations and laboratory experiments. Finally, an enhanced controller is applied to reduce current harmonics, enabling the STATCOM to operate as an active filter.
