Abstract
This thesis explores how intersubjectivity can be understood through physicist David Bohm’s idea of the implicate order. Intersubjectivity concerns how people share experiences and meanings. Here, the notion of “intersubjective fields” is replaced by the implicate order, because it conveys an undivided wholeness. The implicate order is described as a multidimensional, deeper reality in which everything that was, is, and will be is enfolded; matter, the so-called explicate order, and consciousness are projected from it. If all observable phenomena are projections of the implicate order, then non-locality and non-causality become central terms for psychological models grounded in a metaphysical ontological framework. The human being is viewed as a “sub-totality,” meaning part of the undivided whole. This challenges the assumption that subjective experience is confined to the body. Experience unfolds through the implicate order, so subjective experience is not fixed within a single individual and is fundamentally intersubjective. Existential phenomenology, especially via Ernesto Spinelli, is used as a bridge between physics and psychology. On this basis, three levels of existence are developed: implicate order, worlding, and worldview. The explicate order is replaced with “worldview” to explain human meaning-making at a structural level in relation to embodied existential insecurities. “Worlding” refers to the pre-reflective unfolding of the implicate order into lived experience, which cannot be fully captured in language, because any description will inevitably objectify worlding at the level of worldview. The thesis is situated within cultural psychology through Branco and Valsiner’s dynamic semiotic field theory, emphasizing intersubjectivity and critiquing the model’s limited social dimensions. Dialogue is highlighted in its original sense, “through meaning,” to show how worlding unfolds through the implicate order. The thesis illustrates the structures of worlding and worldview and their dialogue, and understands the sublime as a mediator in transformative changes of worldview. It calls for seeing theories as deeply contextualized worldviews and for recognizing the creative process in psychological research and therapy.
