Abstract

This thesis examines whether interactive, sound-based art installations can act as a social binder by fostering a sense of unity and group flow in small groups. It builds on literature suggesting that music can induce trance-like states and coordinated behavior, and develops a theoretical framework around musical elements such as patterns, timbre, and ensemble interaction. Guided by this framework, the project designs and implements an interactive installation through multiple iterations, followed by usability tests and public installations. Early results suggest the installation can support connectedness and shared flow, especially among younger participants, while underscoring the need for larger studies with more diverse age groups to validate the effects more generally. Overall, the work points to promising potential for sound-based interactive art as a social catalyst.
