Integration of students from Bangladesh into the Danish labour Market

Abstract

In recent years Denmark has seen growing numbers of international students, yet many leave after graduation due to difficulties entering the job market. This thesis examines the challenges Bangladeshi students face when integrating into the Danish labour market and how they navigate them. It employs a qualitative case study using a mono-method design with 10 semi-structured interviews of Bangladeshi graduates who completed higher education in Denmark and are currently employed in Danish companies. Findings are interpreted through Activity Theory and Work Adjustment Theory and analysed thematically. Four overarching themes emerge: language proficiency, job market dynamics and networking, workplace integration, and stringent immigration policy. Participants also shared strategies to overcome barriers and offered recommendations for universities and employers to ease future students’ transition to work. The study is relevant for international students, employers, and policymakers seeking to improve the retention of foreign graduates in Denmark.

Denne afhandling undersøger, hvilke udfordringer studerende fra Bangladesh møder i deres vej ind på det danske arbejdsmarked, og hvordan de håndterer dem. Studiet er et kvalitativt casestudie baseret på en mono-metode med 10 semi-strukturerede interviews med bangladeshiske kandidater, som har afsluttet en videregående uddannelse i Danmark og nu arbejder i danske virksomheder. Fundene fortolkes i lyset af aktivitetsteori og Work Adjustment Theory og analyseres tematisk.
