Abstract
The UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set shared global targets for sustainable development. Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) is a process that evaluates the environmental implications of plans and programmes to guide decisions toward sustainable outcomes. This thesis examines how the SDGs can be integrated into SEA practice in the Danish context. Using qualitative methods, including interviews and a review of the literature, it explores both direct and indirect links between the SDGs and SEA, considering SEA as a formal tool and as a professional practice. The study identifies potential benefits of using the SDGs to strengthen SEA and proposes practical ways to embed these benefits in practice. It also discusses factors that may enable or constrain a shift toward objective-led SEA, understood as SEA guided by clear sustainability objectives. Finally, the thesis offers a short set of recommendations for integrating the SDGs into Danish SEA practice.
