Abstract
Global organizations highlight the needs of refugees with disabilities, yet official statistics are scarce and their own perspectives are often missing from research. This thesis examines the lived experiences and agency of refugees with disabilities in Greece, focusing on how they navigate everyday life and the interfaces with state and aid systems. Based on semi-structured video interviews with three refugees living in Athens, analyzed through reflexive thematic analysis and supported by document analysis and secondary sources, the study develops four themes. Guided by structuration theory’s duality of structure and the concepts of stuckness and social identity, the analysis highlights how bureaucratic procedures constrain access to healthcare and become a source of accommodation and financial strain. Participants’ accounts also illustrate waiting and immobility (stuckness) and ongoing identity formation at individual, interactional, and institutional levels. The study underscores systemic barriers and the strategies people use to cope within them, and points to the need for better data and more inclusive policies and support in Greece.
