Abstract

This thesis evaluates China–India relations by comparing two China-led initiatives: the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), a global infrastructure and connectivity plan, and the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB), a multilateral development bank. Both were launched as part of China’s external development strategy. India joined AIIB quickly but continues to keep its distance from BRI. The central question is: why did India join AIIB but stay away from BRI? To answer this, the thesis first outlines the recent trajectory of China–India relations and China’s growing power, which shape India’s views, especially of BRI. It then analyzes India’s different perceptions and attitudes toward AIIB and BRI. The study uses a neorealist lens—focusing on state interests and power—and evaluates how India’s national interests inform these contrasting choices. The conclusion brings the evidence and theory together in a single analytical framework to address the research question.
