Abstract

Our cities are brighter than ever, but artificial light at night has a downside: light pollution. It is increasing, and there is a clear gap between science and legislation. Research points to solutions that are not reflected in laws and guidelines, and many existing rules focus mainly on astronomy (such as the visibility of the night sky) while overlooking ecological effects and impacts on people. Because light is so essential to daily life, addressing this issue requires a shift in perspective: moving beyond a human-above-all mindset and reconnecting people with nature. This thesis takes an ecocentric, “more-than-human” approach that considers the needs of humans, animals, and ecosystems together. It examines the different dimensions of light pollution and outlines a practical plan for a city to manage and reduce it, with a particular emphasis on ecological considerations.
