Abstract
This thesis examines how female genital mutilation (FGM) is framed in scholarly literature and whether a theoretical approach that combines structure and agency (structuration theory) can improve understanding of how the practice may be eliminated. Drawing on a critical review and qualitative content analysis of 70 peer‑reviewed articles from multiple disciplines, the study analyzes four domains: understandings of FGM, reasons for continuation, challenges to elimination, and strategies for elimination. The analysis finds that none of the 70 articles explicitly integrate both structure and agency, although several invoke related concepts. The thesis argues that systematically incorporating both dimensions can broaden explanations and support the design of more effective, context‑sensitive interventions that address the social structures sustaining FGM as well as the individual actions and choices that reproduce or contest it. In doing so, the study provides an analytical foundation for future research and policy aimed at ending FGM.
