Abstract

This thesis explores how to implement ethics and diversity in service design processes for digital services by developing a practical intervention for designers. Motivated by the growing reliance on IT artifacts in digital services and the resulting changes in user interactions, the study identifies a need to educate designers in ethical conduct and support their moral understanding of diversity (including, but not limited to, sexual orientation, national origin, religion, socioeconomic status, and race). Through a systematic literature review, interviews with designers and practitioners, and iterative ideation, prototyping, and evaluation, the concept CANVAS was developed—a scenario-based card exercise that helps designers integrate ethical and diversity considerations into the design process. CANVAS can be used throughout a project as a complement to workshops, facilitation sessions, or critical discussions, with the aim of including diverse user perspectives and supporting reflection on ethics in design practice for services in the digital realm.
