Abstract
This case study aimed to examine whether a lunch intervention targeting families with schoolchildren can promote healthy lunchboxes at school. Using a multicomponent health promotion approach—educational activities, a lunchbox workshop, kitchen activities, and a parent event delivered in school and supermarket settings and via mass media—the study assessed children’s Knowledge, Attitudes and Practices (KAP). Two preschool classes at Højby School photographed their lunchboxes and took part in focus groups; a knowledge-based quiz was administered before (n=24) and after (n=27) the intervention, and three parents participated in semi-structured interviews. An independent t-test showed a statistically significant difference between boys and girls after the intervention (p=0.047). Focus groups indicated a general awareness among children of what a healthy lunchbox should include, and parent interviews showed strong attention to preparing healthy lunches, while also highlighting challenges related to children’s limited preferences. Overall, the findings suggest a shared understanding aligned with the five elements of Madpakkehånden and support considering healthy lunch habits in new school legislation alongside physical activity.
