Abstract
This thesis examines whether and how different forms of social capital (bonding, bridging, and linking) are associated with residents’ adherence to governmental directives and public health recommendations during the COVID-19 pandemic. Focusing on six boroughs of Montreal, Quebec, it draws on a questionnaire administered in winter 2020 as part of a larger CITE-ID project. Using statistical tests (chi-square tests of independence, independent-sample t-tests, and Pearson correlations), the study explores associations between social ties and compliance with non-pharmaceutical interventions. The work is motivated by evidence that higher social capital supports community resilience and by debates about how different social ties influence behavior during prolonged crises. The provided pages outline the research aim, context, and methods; specific empirical findings are not included in this excerpt.
