Impact of 3D Virtual Tours on User Experience

Abstract
3D web technology such as WebGL (a browser technology for interactive 3D graphics) creates new opportunities to present homes as virtual tours. The real estate industry shows strong interest in using 3D to display residences online. We examined whether 3D tours change which apartments users prefer and how 3D affects the user experience compared with traditional 2D tours. Using a two-tailed Wilcoxon signed-rank statistical test on participants’ rankings, we found no statistically significant difference between apartment rankings based on 2D and 3D tours. However, participants found 3D more engaging and more helpful for judging the apartment’s size, space, and layout. At the same time, 2D was perceived as more intuitive, more efficient, and overall easier to use than 3D. Our findings are limited by the small sample size (30 participants), and we recommend that future studies include more participants.

I ejendomsbranchen er interessen stor for at bruge 3D til at præsentere boliger online. Vi undersøgte, om 3D-oplevelser påvirker, hvilke lejligheder brugere foretrækker, og hvordan 3D ændrer brugeroplevelsen sammenlignet med traditionelle 2D-ture. Med en tohalet Wilcoxon signed-rank statistisk test af deltagernes rangeringer fandt vi ingen statistisk signifikant forskel mellem valg baseret på 2D- og 3D-ture. Deltagerne oplevede dog 3D som mere engagerende og bedre til at vurdere lejlighedens størrelse, plads og planløsning. Samtidig blev 2D opfattet som mere intuitiv, mere effektiv og samlet set lettere at bruge end 3D. Vores resultater er begrænset af, at undersøgelsen kun havde 30 deltagere, og vi anbefaler, at fremtidige studier om emnet inkluderer flere deltagere.
