Abstract
This thesis presents a positioned synthesis of how the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) take discursive and material shape through the imaginaries of Danish public, political, and corporate institutions. Using a techno‑anthropological lens, the SDGs are treated as a social technology and followed in practice as they are enacted in socio‑material assemblages that can open up or constrain imaginative horizons and possible futures. Situated in the Danish context—spanning government, municipalities, businesses, and consultants—the study highlights the power relations and prevailing ideologies that shape SDG work, including labelling and the belief in economic decoupling. On this basis, it asks whether the SDGs can break with a conventional understanding of sustainable development and argues for transformation as a change in perception that embraces uncertainty and supports more inclusive, ethically aware approaches.
