Abstract
Abstract This study aims to examine the circumstances and elements necessary for a romantic relationship to withstand the test of time and evolve into a long-term committed partnership. Additionally, we explore why individuals choose to pursue romantic relationships despite the challenges and complexities often associated with love. In Danish society, this topic is gaining increasing popularity through podcasts that delve into the psychology of romantic relationships and offer advice on individual behavior and understanding of partners. However, this trend raises concerns as it may foster unrealistic expectations regarding what can be demanded from romantic relationships and each other. Therefore, we seek to elucidate the supportive circumstances for romantic relationships and assess their accessibility to the Danish populace at present. We aim to achieve this by examining podcasts and their potential contribution to shaping unrealistic ideals about long-term romantic relationships. We analyze the content of these podcasts, the backgrounds of the hosts offering advice, and explore podcasts that discuss love as a phenomenon and its impact on contemporary societal ideals. This examination is underpinned by various psychological and sociological theories, enabling a comprehensive understanding of love across different historical contexts, the contemporary conception of love, conducive circumstances for enduring relationships, and the motivations behind choosing love. Our findings reveal that the prevailing individualism of modern society can pose challenges for long-term relationships. There exists a paradox between the desire for a partner who provides support, aids in self-development, and facilitates positive experiences, and the diminishing tolerance for compromise, overcoming challenges, and managing negative emotions—integral aspects of sustaining long-lasting relationships. The uncertainty and plethora of choices in today's society may make it difficult for individuals to navigate, potentially leading to the emergence of unrealistic ideals and placing strain on long-term relationships. Various experts in the field of psychology provide answers and guidance to uncertainties in contemporary society, with psychological pop-theories often substituting traditional norms and rules regarding love and relationships. This expertise is disseminated through various modern media, including podcasts. Although these podcasts emerge from a need for answers, they risk contributing to the problem by creating ideals and unrealistic expectations regarding love and potential partners.
