Abstract

This thesis explores how urban furniture, such as benches, lighting, bins, and signage, helps shape a city's identity and image. It focuses on Aalborg and the ongoing redevelopment of its harbor area. After reviewing foundational theories in urban design, industrial design, and visual communication, the project proposes that the municipality adopt a strategy that enables and empowers residents to work with the city to co-design their surroundings. The central argument is that designers should collaborate closely with users, especially when creating objects intended for public spaces.
