"I Know They Are Listening": Understandings of In-Home Physical Digital Assistants

Abstract

In-home physical digital assistants are becoming increasingly common. This qualitative study examines how households experience and use Amazon Echo, Google Home, and Clova Friends in everyday life. Thirteen semi-structured interviews with daily users from eight Danish and five Japanese households were analyzed using Thematic Network Analysis. The analysis yielded seven themes—usage, motivation, learning, placement, challenges, perception, and trust and privacy—summarizing typical use cases, reasons for adoption, and barriers. Participants described similar routines and motivations and reported varying perceptions of their devices, with generally minimal privacy concerns related to physical placement. The paper discusses these findings and offers considerations for improving the experience of in-home assistants across brands and home contexts.

Fysiske digitale assistenter i hjemmet bliver stadig mere udbredte. Dette kvalitative studie undersøger, hvordan husstande oplever og bruger Amazon Echo, Google Home og Clova Friends i hverdagen. Tretten semistrukturerede interviews med daglige brugere fra otte danske og fem japanske husstande blev analyseret ved hjælp af Thematic Network Analysis. Analysen resulterede i syv temaer—brug, motivation, læring, placering, udfordringer, opfattelse samt tillid og privatliv—som sammenfatter typiske anvendelser, årsager til ibrugtagning og barrierer. Deltagerne beskrev lignende rutiner og motivationer og havde varierende opfattelser af deres enheder, med generelt minimale bekymringer om privatliv i relation til den fysiske placering.
