"I Am Iron Man": An Affective Engagement Study of MCU's Tony Stark

Abstract

This thesis investigates how films make viewers engage with characters, especially through spectacle scenes—big, visually striking moments. It shows that such scenes do more than dazzle; they can also deepen empathy and reveal character. I combine Murray Smith’s structures of sympathy with my own idea of affect (emotional impact) to link story elements with spectacle. This creates what I call affective engagement within the film’s world (diegesis), building a bond between viewer and character. As a case study, the thesis analyzes Tony Stark in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Because the MCU is vast, the focus is on Tony Stark’s development across the first three phases, as his story unfolds through three Iron Man films and four Avengers films. The close analysis centers on the last two films of Phase Three. I argue that Stark’s character arc is among the most notable in the MCU: he begins morally gray—arrogant and self-interested—but ends with an ultimate selfless choice that produces a strong emotional payoff. Empathy accumulates as audiences gain access to his traumatic past and watch him confront and repair past failures. The thesis also considers the interplay between character and actor, discussing how Tony Stark/Robert Downey Jr. brings personal experiences and traits into the role.
