Abstract
Human rights violations occurred in Europe during the European migrant crisis. This thesis examines how strong anti-immigration rhetoric, often xenophobic (hostile toward foreigners), used mainly by right-wing parties in several EU countries shaped the treatment of migrants and enabled rights violations. It argues that framing the large inflow of migrants as a security threat made harsh measures, including state-sanctioned use of force, appear legitimate. It also contends that the absence of a common EU migration policy led countries to act on their own, further influencing how the situation unfolded.
