Abstract

Against the backdrop of accelerating globalization and Bangladesh’s 2014 relaxation of outward investment rules, this thesis examines how firm capabilities shape variation in motivation to internationalize among emerging multinational enterprises. Using a qualitative, secondary-data multiple case study of six Bangladeshi firms (Summit Group BD, Akij Group BD, DBL Group BD, Squire Pharmaceuticals BD, BSRM BD and MJL BD), the study reviews each company’s history and operations to identify capability profiles and entry modes. The analysis indicates that internal capabilities—such as annual revenue, growth rate, international relationships, and internal management strengths including supply chain management, teamwork and talent—elevate motivation and support strategy formation for foreign expansion. External conditions—particularly interest rates and credit terms, the ability to secure and service financing, the willingness of other organizations to invest, and the state of supply chain and logistics—also shape motivation; effective supply chain management increases it, while inefficiencies reduce it. The cases display varied entry modes, including OFDI, joint ventures and debt-funded ventures. Overall, the findings suggest that firm capabilities enable access to investors and opportunities abroad and help explain why motivations to internationalize differ across firms.
