Abstract
This thesis examines how People’s Daily frames the Hong Kong National Security Law. Adopting a constructivist stance, it combines framing theory with the concept of imagined communities to analyze the newspaper’s commentary pieces on the law published from May 29, 2020 to February 6, 2021. The method integrates a simple quantitative mapping of publication timing, layout placement, and information sources with topic coding, followed by qualitative analysis of frame structure (problem definitions, causal attributions, and claimed effects), nationalist narratives, and metaphor use. The analysis finds that People’s Daily presents the law as legal and necessary to fill legal gaps and safeguard national security, emphasizes its positive impact on social stability and the preservation of One Country, Two Systems, condemns U.S. interference, and opposes Hong Kong and Taiwan independence forces. It portrays the outcome as a return to normalcy and employs historical and war metaphors, as well as varied voices, to construct a national narrative. The study also considers factors shaping the frames, including national interests and media attributes, and interprets findings within the scope of the outlet, genre, and time period analyzed.
