Abstract

This thesis examines how Airbnb China affects hotels in Beijing from the perspective of hotel managers. Framed by the debate on Airbnb as a potential disruptive innovation and its 2015 entry into the Chinese market, the study employs a qualitative case study using semi-structured interviews with six hotel managers in Beijing. Guided by disruptive innovation theory, the analysis identifies four themes that shape competitive dynamics between hotels and Airbnb in Beijing: the characteristics of Beijing as a destination, differences in service level, security, and location attributes. The findings indicate that Airbnb’s impact on hotels is mediated by these factors rather than a single driver, and is best understood in relation to local market conditions. The study is limited to managers’ perspectives in Beijing and recommends future research incorporating other stakeholders to provide a more comprehensive view.
