Abstract

This thesis examines what makes professional portfolios effective for UX and UI designers when applying for jobs. A portfolio is typically an online collection of projects that shows how a designer approaches user experience (UX) and user interface (UI) work. Prior research often centers on student portfolios or design trends. Here, we ask which parts of a professional portfolio create a positive impression on employers. Our literature review highlights three key focus areas: current industry design trends, the applicant’s identity, and the identity of their profession. Based on these areas, we created three portfolio examples. Methodologically, we use quantitative research together with participant observation and semi-structured interviews with seven participants from companies working in UX/UI. The analysis identifies six themes that can guide portfolio creation to strengthen employers’ perceptions of an applicant: the applicant’s projects, background, identity, employers’ subjective perceptions of portfolios, external content, and the applicant’s knowledge of the hiring company.
