Abstract

This theoretical master’s thesis examines how affordable housing in Ixtapaluca, a fast-growing suburb of Mexico City, affects residents’ happiness and well-being, and how architecture and urban design can mitigate problems created by the megacity’s expansion. Ixtapaluca has expanded rapidly over recent decades and faces challenges related to infrastructure, low architectural and contractual quality, long commutes, risky loans, and safety concerns. The goal is to develop architectural design principles that enhance quality of life through better, more flexible, and socially supportive housing. The work is structured in four parts: (1) an analysis of historical and current issues in Mexico City and Ixtapaluca; (2) a synthesis of research from Mexico and abroad on urban planning, incremental housing, and happiness/well-being; (3) case studies of Latin American social housing projects compared to key themes from the literature, alongside a resident well-being survey in Ixtapaluca; and (4) an evaluation that consolidates these insights into design principles to inform a subsequent, practice-oriented paper. This excerpt outlines the problem, approach, and planned methods; concrete findings and recommendations are presented later in the thesis.
