Abstract
This thesis examines hotel staff perceptions of the Green Key eco-label and the sustainability practices it promotes within the hospitality sector. Addressing a gap in the literature—where employee perspectives are underexplored and certification can add workload and role ambiguity—the study investigates how Green Key is experienced in practice and how it affects daily work routines. It employs a qualitative single-case study of a Green Key–certified hotel in Copenhagen, based on five interviews with staff and insights from the researcher’s four-month internship at Green Key International. The thesis contextualizes the Green Key program, including requirements for an environmental manager, a green committee, and staff training, and explores staff awareness and participation, the perceived importance of certification, perceived contributions to sustainability, and practical challenges of implementation. Specific empirical results are presented in the full thesis and are not included in this excerpt. The study contributes practice-oriented insights into how eco-labels are experienced by frontline hotel staff and what this implies for implementing sustainability in hotel operations.
