Abstract
This thesis explores why highly qualified Indians choose to move to Denmark at a time when the country’s green transition and widespread adoption of the UN Sustainable Development Goals are driving demand for specialized talent. Using a combined research design that relies primarily on qualitative interviews with highly qualified Indian migrants and applying Everett Lee’s push and pull framework, the study examines which conditions in India push migrants to leave and which features of Denmark pull them in. The objective is to test whether socio-economic inequalities in India are the primary push factors and whether higher standards of living and higher wages are the primary pull factors for choosing Denmark. The findings indicate that respondents—largely from India’s middle class—are attracted by higher living standards, higher salaries, and opportunities linked to the Danish education system, while lower pay, poor working conditions, limited job opportunities, intense competition, and class divisions in India act as key push factors. Overall, the results align with Lee’s push and pull theory in the context of Indo-Danish labor migration.
