Abstract

This thesis investigates how trauma-informed, healing architecture can be used to design women's crisis centers that support both emotional and physical recovery from domestic violence. Addressing a largely underexplored building typology, the project combines quantitative evidence (statistics and literature) with qualitative, user-centered methods: participatory workshops and interviews with women who have experienced violence, interviews with crisis-center staff, on-site observations at Aalborg Crisis Center, and an interview with Tórshavn Crisis Center. Findings were thematically analyzed and complemented by a user persona (Mary Jane), within a theoretical framework on healing architecture and an iterative design thinking/Double Diamond approach. A site-specific case study - a proposed center at Stigsborg Brygge in Nørresundby housing 15 women and their children - tests the strategies in practice. The work identifies key design considerations, including spatial organization, acoustic and visual comfort, and secure room configurations, culminating in the Her Choice design proposal and a foundation for a practical design guideline to inform future centers and contribute to socially sustainable architecture.
