Dette speciale undersøger, hvad der motiverer 14–16-årige håndboldpiger, og hvad der bidrager til deres fastholdelse i en foreningsidræt præget af præstationskultur. Undersøgelsen belyser fænomenet fra tre perspektiver: de unge piger, træneransvarlige samt Dansk Håndbold Forbund. Empirien er indsamlet i tre håndboldklubber og omfatter observationer, tre semistrukturerede interviews med træneransvarlige, tre participatoriske workshops, tre fokusgruppeinterviews med 14–16-årige piger samt et interview med en repræsentant fra Dansk Håndbold Forbund. Analysen forankres i motivationsteori, herunder selvbestemmelsesteori og achievement goal theory, samt begreber om præstationssamfund/-kultur og træneren som kulturel leder. Videnskabsteoretisk bygger arbejdet på fænomenologi og hermeneutik med et refleksivt fokus på forforståelser. Analysen adresserer temaer som fællesskab, konkurrence, præstation og udvikling samt trænerens og forbundets betydning for motivation og fastholdelse, og diskuterer tværgående temaer, implikationer for praksis og forskning samt studiets styrker og begrænsninger. This thesis explores what motivates 14–16-year-old female handball players and what supports their retention within an association sport setting shaped by a performance culture. The study examines the phenomenon from three perspectives: the girls themselves, coach managers, and the Danish Handball Federation. Empirical data were collected in three handball clubs and include observations, three semi-structured interviews with coach managers, three participatory workshops, three focus group interviews with 14–16-year-old girls, and one interview with a representative from the Danish Handball Federation. The analysis is grounded in motivation theory, including self-determination theory and achievement goal theory, alongside concepts of the performance society/culture and the coach as a cultural leader. The research adopts phenomenological and hermeneutic approaches with a reflexive stance on preunderstandings. The analysis addresses themes such as community, competition, performance, and development, and considers the roles of coaches and the federation in motivation and retention, while discussing cross-cutting themes, implications for practice and research, and the study’s strengths and limitations.
